Seems that the instructions for (some?) puzzle types with gappy latin squares are missing the requirement that all digits from the range are placed. (Easy As, Top Heavy, Magic Summer at least.)

Oops.. Thanks for pointing this out! An updated version has been uploaded where the necessary statement is added to all the affected puzzle types. The rules aren't changed on the penpa example links, but I'll make sure the competition puzzle links have the change.

Updates & Notes

- As noted above, a rule was missing from the Latin square puzzles having empty cells which was rectified.
- We also had a person pointing out that the Nanro Signpost rules did not explicitly state that all regions must have at least one number, that has been rectified.
- This contest will see the Penpa contest mode being used for the first time. This mode has no Undo button, no share button, and some other such buttons removed, to negate the unfair advantages compared to solving on paper. The clone button is still available, with the rationale that it is a "choice" similar to printing two copies of a puzzle, or transcribing the grid twice and resuming progress, while the Undo button allows a solver to backtrack their mistakes in addition to aiding bifurcation.
- In the contest, all puzzles that have no blank cells will be set to Sudoku mode. The ones that do will be set to Number mode, at times tabbing with Surface to offer an alternate way of marking empty cells.

Hello. In TomTom there is precisely one operation applied to all numbers in one region, not at least one operation. Correct?

Hello. In TomTom there is precisely one operation applied to all numbers in one region, not at least one operation. Correct?

Example: If there is a 3 cell region with the numbers as 2,3,6 and Tomtom clue as 1, both subtraction and division operations can be applied to get the result.
So “at least” instead of “precise”

In "Top Heavy", there is sometimes (often?) a requirement that no 2x2 square can be completely filled by numbers. This is not stated in the IB, but the example is ambiguous (has the "no 2x2 squares property" but can be solved without assuming it).Is the "no 2z2 squares" missing from the instructions, or is it just a coincidence that the booklet example contains no filled 2x2 squares? After looking at the "Top Heavy Tom Tom" example which does have a filled 2z2 square, I gather there is no such rule and it is just a coincidence that the IB example has this property.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen top heavy with a 2x2 constraint. You may be thinking of Fuzuli.

Thank you for example, helps me a lot. But when the operation applies, is only one operation at time, not applying a mixture of operations to get the result. As is not 2x3/6 to get 1. Is either 6-3-2, either 6/3/2, correct?

Really nice puzzles with logical solving paths. Still, maybe I should have been a bit more intuitive here and there. :)
My favorites: TomTom 2, Top Heavy 1, Magic Summer 2, Top Heavy TomTom 1.
Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to participate.

Stunning performance from Sam Cappleman-Lynes!. From the submission timings, it seems he got Magic Summer 3 answer key very very quickly (~3:38) and that made a huge difference. Amongst participants from India, Ashish Kumar turned up a very impressive performance - his approach of solving the puzzles in the reverse order worked well.

57 participants completed the set, with seven in the nervous 90s (and many on 84). So, it seems the set was of a decent approachable difficulty level. True to its name, Easy as 123 was the most correctly submitted puzzle - 240 correct submissions; and Magic Summer 3 was, as expected, the least solved - with only 93 participants getting it right.

Thanks for the feedback - Tiit, Rajesh, Rohan, Murat and Kishore. It was the first time I have created Nanro, Magic Summer, Top Heavy and the exploratory types. So the puzzles may have been a mixed bag. As noticed by Kishore, there was an attempt to balance the overall difficulty, although there may have been a skew towards some puzzles. There was an intended attempt to keep the puzzles easier - with inside givens in skyscrapers, lot of clues in Easy as 123, and small cages in tomtom and Nanro - and most participants breezed through them.

The initial version of puzzles had a 10x10 Top Heavy (Range 1-6), an easier / smaller Nanro 3, and less clues in Magic Summer 3. I think all the three changes worked fine.

PR4 is Regions by Swaroop. Looking forward to it.
